Top Ten Grammar Myths

1. You shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition. Wrong! You shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition when the sentence would mean the same thing if you left off the preposition. That means "Where are you at?" is wrong because "Where are you?" means the same thing. But there are many sentences where the final preposition is part of a phrasal verb or is necessary to keep from making stuffy, stilted sentences: I'm going to throw up, let's kiss and make up, and what are you waiting for are just a few examples.

2. You shouldn't split infinitives. Wrong! Nearly all grammarians want to boldly tell you it's OK to split infinitives. An infinitive is a two-word form of a verb. An example is "to tell." In a split infinitive, another word separates the two parts of the verb. "To boldly tell" is a split infinitive because boldly separates to from tell.

101 New Uses for Everyday Things

10 New Uses for Lemon

“Lemon juice is the strongest food acid in our kitchens, strong enough to make life unbearable for most bacteria,” says Robert Wolke, professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh.4468bf865b098c40f8f922db36e8babb.jpgUse Lemon to:
1. Sanitize a chopping block. Run a slice of lemon over the surface to disinfect.
2. Eliminate the browning that occurs when food sits out too long. Sprinkle apple or pear slices with lemon juice before serving, or squeeze a bit into guacamole and give it a stir.
3. Remove tough food stains from plastic and light-colored wooden cutting boards. Slice a lemon in half, squeeze the juice onto the soiled surface, rub, and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with water.
4. Fade tea stains on cloth. Dilute lemon juice with an equal amount of water. Use an eyedropper or a Q-tip to make sure the juice targets the stain. Thoroughly flush with cool water.

Born on the same day!

Next January will be an expensive month for Martin and Kim MacKriell. Three siblings share a birthday!!!

Their three children were all born on the same day, beating odds of one in 130,000 – so they won't just be tightening their belts after Christmas. Robin, now 14, arrived first - on 29 January, 1994. Rebecca arrived on the same day - two years later - and Ruby was born on 29 January this year.61b53a5cfeaea1dde2ed401394b21696.jpg

'Everyone thinks it is really weird,' says 14-year-old Robin, who acts as spokesman because his parents are deaf.

The proper use of the semicolon

It was nearly hidden on a New York City Transit public service placard exhorting subway riders not to leave their newspaper behind when they get off the train.bbc8c209c5e909a25cd31c28c8522214.jpg“Please put it in a trash can,” riders are reminded. After which Neil Neches, an erudite writer in the transit agency’s marketing and service information department, inserted a semicolon. The rest of the sentence reads, “that’s good news for everyone.”

Semicolon sightings in the city are unusual, period, much less in exhortations drafted by committees of civil servants. In literature and journalism, not to mention in advertising, the semicolon has been largely jettisoned as a pretentious anachronism.

Americans, in particular, prefer shorter sentences without, as style books advise, that distinct division between statements that are closely related but require a separation more prolonged than a conjunction and more emphatic than a comma.

To all my readers from around the world: Happy Valentine's!

MEET THE PIG WITH A LOVE HEART ON HER COAT

0eff153309ca52454beb216d3a8769b8.jpg

Pint-sized piglet Valentine is hoping that her heart-shaped patch will be a hit with the boars.

The dinky Gloucestershire Old Spot piglet from Byford's Farm in Taynton, near Newent, surprised farmer Eric Freeman when she popped out with unusual markings.

The piglet was around 10 days old when she was pictured in The Citizen.

Mr Freeman, 75, a founder member of Gloucestershire Old Spots Pig Breeders' Club, said Valentine's mum Mandi Lou was quite happy for her daughter to steal the show.

He said: "Some sows get really annoyed and squeal but Old Spots are known for being quiet. Mandi Lou was very good and didn't mind Valentine having her picture taken."

Aussie penis painter's welcome

VISITORS to the opening day of Sexpo in South Africa today were treated to live demonstrations by Australian artist Tim Patch, alias "Pricasso," of his penis paintings of famous global figures.

Neither US President George W Bush, former British prime minister Tony Blair nor former Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi were spared the rod as a naked but for a top hat Patch hammered out a series of surprisingly realistic depictions. e31acd5bb9d0d06c31bbcea7220bcc1e.jpg

Lengthy queues had formed outside the Gallagher Estate in Midrand outside Johannesburg by mid-morning on the first day of the first sex-themed fair in a country with a puritanical past under apartheid.

The organizers of Sexpo Johannesburg have said they hope to attract 30,000 visitors to the four-day show that originated in Australia, which features a mix of workshops, exhibition stands and live performances.

Emirates father of 78 eyes new brides

A one-legged Emirati father of 78 is lining up his next two wives in a bid to reach his target of 100 children by 2015, Emirates Today reports.

Daad Mohammed Murad Abdul Rahman, 60, has already had 15 brides although he has to divorce them as he goes along to remain within the legal limit of four wives at a time.

"In 2015 I will be 68 years old and will have 100 children," the local tabloid quoted Abdul Rahman as saying.

"In 2015 I will be 68 years old and will have 100 children," the local tabloid quoted Abdul Rahman as saying.

"After that I will stop marrying. I have to have at least three more marriages to hit the century."

Islam allows men to marry up to four women at a time, though most marry only one. The UAE is a Muslim country but is home to migrants from around the world.

Beautiful people earn 12% more than Ugly

Those who consoled themselves with the thought that there is more to life than being really goodlooking are in for a shock. For the beautiful people are not just pleasing on the eye: it seems they are also wealthier, more successful and much easier to get on with.

Researchers investigating whether there is a beauty premium to be had in the workplace have found that those they deemed the most attractive make 12 per cent more money than those regarded as less goodlooking. 596268ba1e50d40e1b5e97c5674eb83a.jpg

The main reason for the apparent victory of the lookers is that they are seen as more helpful and co-operative.

"Attractive people make more money than middle attractive people, who in turn make more money than unattractive people," declared the researchers.

The scientists said their work was applicable across different societies and work settings.

"Good looks have what social scientists call the halo effect. Because someone is attractive, we assign many other positive attributes to him or her that have nothing to do with looks."
